I have fun with container gardening because of limited space. Even those pots get weeds! But last year I did companion planting for the first time and I will expand on it this year. Really helps maximize limited space, more efficiently uses water, and even pest control.

We have the land, we have the desire, we have the seeds, we have the tools, we've even taken a class that promoted this book’s theme, but it only shared a few pairings. The book is colorful and easy to follow! Have we tried out its suggestions? Alas no, our move and the clearing of land left us in the wrong season… But, this resource will be valuable come spring!

Not your typical garden book! I bought one and a friend did the same. We both have been gardening for years, and find ourselves discussing something else we learned. It's actually turned out to be a very fun read and also having a few- AH-HA moments, when we realized "so that's why X failed" it was planted by Y and they don't like each other. We both love this book!

Even if your garden is a collection of flower pots that sit on your patio/balcony or a sunny window you will love all the information about different veggies, herbs, fruit trees, and yes even poisonous plants! But don’t forget the companion book “Roses Love Garlic “ I reference both of these books while planning my garden!

My mother had a copy of this book when I was growing up, and gardening has deep roots (pun intended) in our family so I read through this book constantly. I’m so happy to have my own copy as an adult with my own gardens now. This author was a plant genius and her wisdom and writing style are not only informative, but enjoyable to read for all ages. I also really like the illustrations. There’s something organic and original about sketches in books like this that really draw me in (that pun was not intended). Don’t hesitate to get a copy of this book, you will cherish it for years and likely loan it out to loved ones.

I've been gardening all my life. My home library would rival any public library on the subject of growing things. Most all of the reviews are true in one since or another, it depends on what you're looking for. For the first time gardener it's perfect. It's a place to start as it pretty much covers and touches it all. Not just carrots and tomatoes. For the experienced grower like I like to consider myself I think it is a great review. I can go look up the subject further if I want more of an explanation. A good memory jogger is another way to put it. Good book, not overly burdening with information a great place to start, or review.

I'm an avid gardener and was really pleased to find this book. So far, I've found the advice to be spot-on as far as what plants complement each other and help to repel pests. The only caution would be that this book is really written for milder climates (i.e., cold winters and warm summers). If you live in a very hot and humid climate like mine (for example), you will not be able to grow some of the things she recommends. But, that said, it's really not the point of her book. So, get yourself a good book from your Ag Extension Service or local organic gardening source, buy this book and have fun!

I've owned this book for years, used it's ideas when gardening and I grew almost all our food in my huge gardens for my family when we lived on our farm. I found tremendous differences in how different veggies grew and produced based on who their neighbors were .... I could have saved myself time and effort if I'd had this book from the beginning. Anyway, I shared my book with so many friends ... so why did I buy it now? this one was a gift for a friend.

This has been my new garden bible. I had zero squash bugs--ZERO!--after planting radishes around my squash. Amazing. I've also had trouble with broccoli for years and after putting a pot of mint in the bed they grew and FAST! Two plants got long before I knew it.

This book has really helped what I tried to grow do much better, and is the basis of how I design my various garden sections so things don't bump up against incompatible plants. Thank you!

Purchased as a gift for my husband. He says it's the first gardening book that's excited him in a long time... new ideas/things to try. He is using it as a major reference for planning/arranging our organic veggie garden for the 2015 growing season. Will all the 'new' work as described? Only time will tell, but if nothing more than the joy of 'dreaming' it's already given him, then it's been worth every penny.

This book is indispensable. I am a second year vegetable gardener. I do square foot gardening on a 4 X 8 bed in a community garden. I followed Louise's recs for companion gardening. Everything is growing very well. I have had no insect infestations. A woman who has the bed next to mine has a terrible insect infestation with her tomatoes. This hasn't affected my tomatoes. There's a lot of wisdom and practical knowledge in this book. It's also enjoyable to read. I borrowed it from the library and enjoyed it so much, I bought a hard copy to keep.

I discovered that I have been making some big mistakes when planning my gardens. This book is not only useful, it also is written in a format that makes it easy to find the fruits and vegetables that I actually enjoy. The author presents ideas for gardens for acreages, suburban gardens, postage stamp gardens, window box gardens, rooftop gardens, balcony gardens, children's gardens, and elevated gardens for the elderly or disabled. She also has a chapter on poisonous plants. She even includes wild plants.

A terrific book for anyone just getting started in gardening. I had no idea plants were so sensitive. I have created a garden plan based on the tips I picked up mostly from this book and I look forward to an abundant, pest free garden this year. I'm expecting my plants to flourish as they co-habitate with mutually beneficial plants. By the way, carrots do love tomatoes, but they love peas and lettuce even more!

I love gardening but I am not a pro at it. I mostly do it for fun and rewarded with a few veggies each year. The last couple of years I've been getting garden pests which have been annoying me! After reading this book I had no idea of some of the mistakes I was making. I am now planning (which I never did before) and can't wait for spring! This book tells you what plants are compatable with each other and what plants help fend off certain garden pests. It also informs you what not to plant next to each other. It even suggests certain flowers are helpful. This book is perfect for beginners and recreational gardeners. It's a quick and easy read that I think will be helpful each year.

I have spent some time pouring over the pages of Carrots Love Tomatoes, but I've found when it comes to companion planting it's just a great resource to have on hand. I got out my pink highlighter and went to town highlighting paragraphs that specifically dealt with the plants I had in my garden. The authors information is clear and very, very helpful!! And I found her advice to be true!! The plants she recommends planting together really do help keep pests away! It's amazing!

I cannot think of any pert of this book I did not like, but if we get picky, I would want to ask for color pictures. I never considered planting many plants together or even with flowers or herbs. Traditional planting was rigid learned in my lifetime. I am now using the advice from this book, it has brought me mixed feelings. Change is something I don't do overnight so I have been experimenting with the advice and having success. I recommend using this book in conjunction with another for pest: The Organic Gardener's Handbook of Natural Pest and Disease Control.

    initial reaction and informal commentary:

Since removing our back lawn and putting in a garden, I wanted to make the best use of space and one of the ways I thought to do that was by companion planting and so I have been on the lookout for both books and websites which might share such information. I came across this little gem while quite well known as an organic gardener and has written some 12 books about gardening.

One thing I particularly loved was all the folk lore which she shared about plants. I also appreciated the homespun wisdom which she imparted. She tells the reader not to consider weeds all bad as they are working the dirt by putting their roots through the earth and helping to break it up and keep it aerated for the gardener.

The layout of the book is somewhat encyclopedic with chapters on garden vegetables, herbs, weeds, fruit trees, nut trees, garden pests and garden types. In the chapter on vegetables she details what plants work well together as well as which to avoid and gardening techniques for each.

I found this book to be helpful and I'm using the information this year in planning my garden and will use it as a reference book in the future.

We have followed this book and love it. We purchased this home and the previous owner struggled with pest invading her garden and resorted to spraying toxic chemicals to rid the garden of pests. We have never sprayed. We do not have problems with pests in our garden nor do we have blights or funguses in our garden. Love this method. It is fun to plan a garden around this method each year.

This book will gives great advice on larger vegetables and greater yields. After trying all last summer to rid my beans and cucumbers of tiny critters that were eating the leaves of some of the plants, and failing, I stopped them this spring by simply placing marigolds between troubled plants. The book suggested planting basil around the tomato patch. It works! My tomatoes are growing much faster than their siblings without basil.

Read this book, follow its clear, practical advice and step back! You will be amazed at what your plants will do!

My husband purchased this book for me and this is another 'must have' gardening book that I just love. I read it over the winter and was really biting at the bit to get started this spring with my vegetable placement plan. I have a small yard and I was able to put all my veges in with the help of this book. I live in the Pacific NW and we get a late start here waiting for things to get warm, but the gardening season usually ends with a bang. Will update you later on about how things worked out.

Excellent companion to, "Seed to Seed" consult it whether you are planting a window box or multiple acres. Most knowledgeable author on this topic I have encountered. Entertainingly illustrated book is well laid out, valuable information regarding vegetables, herbs and trees can all be found instantly. The information is concise, well documented, and immediately useful. I will recommend this under-represented book to anyone handling any type of plant in the future. Don't plan a garden without it, don't fertilize without it and don't treat plant problems without consulting this work first.

How have I gone so long without such a must-have, classic book? This rare treasure among a sea of gardening guides? Written originally in 1975 and updated in 1998, Carrots Love Tomatoes: Secrets of Companion Planting for Successful Gardening, published by the well-respected Storey Publishing, should be the bible which we all refer to when deciding where to thoughtfully place each plant in our garden. Who knew that beans and onions would hinder the growth of one another? And how did Louise Riotte know that planting celery near cauliflower would deter the white cabbage butterfly? There are no flashy photographs in this book nor dreamy prose. Yet there is such a wealth of information here dispersed among simple and informative drawings. If only I had known last year that dill may affect carrot growth in a negative way, I may have ended up with carrots that weren't the size of cocktail weenies. It truly does matter which veggies end up being neighbors. If you don't plant the right guys next to each other, you'll end up with HBO-worthy fighting over nutrients that will prevent one or both of them from flourishing.

Here are just a few great tips I learned from my new favorite book:
    * basil helps keep tomatoes healthy from disease while improving growth and flavor
    * beets and kohlrabi grow well together because they take soil nourishment at different levels
    * broccoli is hindered by tomatoes

Pick this book up and you'll see how many great tips you can find to ensure your crop this year is the best it can be.

    I love this book!

I garden organically and have to deal with all the conditions that come against our good, organic intentions; sometimes we're left with just frustration. However, armed with the knowledge packed into this book, many of those frustrations have been eliminated.

For example: I love roses. Unfortunately, so do aphids. But, thanks to this book, I learned that aphids do NOT like garlic! Viola, now I can enjoy the beauty of my roses without a single aphid on them!

My neighbor owns this book, and I've borrowed it so heavily from him that I finally had to buy my own copy. I highly recommend all gardeners (whether organic or not) to get this book and tap into the wealth of information contained in it's pages!

With a very easy language, it tells you little secrets of "how to" of companion planting! And it's not only that, it even says details for a lot of species, and even detailed drawings.
It tells about herbs, vegetables, wild plants, nuts, ornamental trees, pest controls, etc.
    I recommend!

Now I know why my carrots ( yes, it just happens that my veges were carrots) were so good last year. I had 'acidentally' planted them in a great companion location!
