Hands-On Agronomy

The soil is more than just a substrate that anchors crops in place. An ecologically balanced soil system is essential for maintaining healthy crops. This is a comprehensive manual on soil management. The “whats and whys” of micronutrients, earthworms, soil drainage, tilth, soil structure and organic matter are explained in detail. Kinsey shows how working with the soil produces healthier crops with a higher yield drawing on his wide range of experience as a master consultant. Learn how to balance soil nutrients for maximum yield. Discover why simple N-P-K fertilization isn’t enough. Understand the proper use of manures, compost, tillage, micronutrients and more. Kinsey gives first-rate science that brings organiculture and conventional farming together on speaking terms and indicts toxic rescue chemistry at the same time.

Honestly, this book has so much information it's a bit overwhelming, but definitely worth it if you can get through it. My mind was blown by how clear the research and writing is regarding soil health. If we know all this, and have for so long, why aren't more of us acting on it urgently and at scale?! Can't wait to put some of this information to use.

Adding compost, fertilizer or planting cover crops is just a shot in the dark without knowing what your soil really needs, in fact you can even overdo a good thing! Kinsey explains your soils needs in descending order from the most important to the ones to take care of after the "big picture" is accomplished, and what happens when you have too much of a good thing. Anyone from the backyard gardener to the large scale farmer or rancher will understand the importance of the basic building blocks of the soil and best of all, an explanation of why for each mineral and nutrient. It will remain an important reference book for me for as long as I have anything to do with a garden, crops, or livestock.

There is so much to learn in the area of growing food. This is a must read for anyone looking to learn how to increase quality and yield of their crops.

Every year it needs to be reread because there is so much information you tend to forget it over the course of the year.

You could easily waste money buying the wrong fertilizer and applying at the wrong time. Better to be educated or at least have a background to ask the right questions to the so called experts.

Neil has a way different thinking than universities but I believe his way is probably more accurate for high yielding crops.

I have been following Neal since before he wrote the first edition of Hands-On Agronomy. His insight into soil fertility as outlined by Dr. Albrecht continues to inspire me and should be required reading by anyone looking to understand the relationship of all living organisms to the balance of nutrients available in the soil. Optimum production of any crop is only achieved with proper levels of all major, secondary and micronutrients. I know of no other place that lays these optimum levels and their relationship out so plainly and so easy to comprehend.

This book has been key to our goal of developing a self-sustainable homestead. It all starts with the soil and Neal Kinsey explains why and how. If the soil is healthy, the plants will be healthy, which means the animals and people eating them will be healthy. It also means the manure with be healthy. One of the things I learned from this book is that not all manure and compost are equal! .

Mr. Kinsey subscribes to the Albrecht System which works toward balancing the soil. There is a lot of science in this book (which is pretty much written for the lay person), along with a lot of personal examples of its principles and case studies.

Having our soil properly tested for micronutrients and then remineralizing it is a long-term investment in our homestead and everything on it. No matter your farming philosophy, this book is an excellent and helpful resource.
